Heronwood Farm

Upperville, Virginia

Based on the architecture of Virginia’s hunt country, the barns at Heronwood Farm feature fieldstone and stucco exteriors and heavy timber oak framing. The first to incorporate Blackburn Architects’ signature techniques, the barns have continual ridge skylights and vertical ventilation, to create a healthy and sustainable environment for the horse. Blackburn Architects was called upon to complete several projects on the Heronwood property. These projects and completion dates are as follows: Grafton Estate Meadow (completed in 1986); broodmare and yearling barns (completed in 1986); new staff housing (completed in 1990); round pen (completed in 1995); estate barn (renovation completed in 2000); and covered riding arena (2009).
