Blackburn Architects renovated and customized over 2,000 square feet for a design studio housed behind a preserved, historic townhouse facade in the DuPont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. The office space embodies practical sustainable design by maximizing usable space, minimizing unnecessary materials and design features, and reducing energy consumption. Bamboo flooring covers the lobby, conference room, and main studio on the first floor. The second floor features custom-designed workstations made of layered plywood and finished in a clear poly-acrylic coat, showing the natural, true form of the materials. Ceiling clouds dampen the acoustics of the open studio space, creating an environment that is open and spacious, peaceful and productive.
